Morlaix to Carhaix (V7)

This cycle route has been created on a disused railway track. When the railway was created they decided to use the metric system and made the track one metre in width. When the larger, faster trains were developed they could not run on this line and with the advent of cars the line was no longer economical. It is now a Voie Verte and we followed it all day. Our past experience has been that these tracks can be a bit dull as they are flat, tree-lined and tend not to pass through towns, so you can travel all day and not see very much. This one was a little better as it did go up and down some hills and we got some good views at times. It also enabled us to ride side by side and talk, without the hassle of cars speeding by. A mouse did run across our track though! We passed by some old stations, some derelict and others renovated, and these are always interesting as they either contain historical items or murals. We left the track to go on a side visit to Huelgoat, where we had originally planned to stay, and it was worth the extra effort. As well as being a lakeside village it has a deep gorge with huge boulders stretching from the lake to high up in the surrounding hills. There are lots of forrest walks and some old mines.

Leaving Morlaix - much better weather than when we arrived.
